Blog Reboot

This is a reboot of my blog, now at http://blog.davidpallmann.com. You can find my earlier 2008-2020 posts at http://old-blog.davidpallmann.com. There’s a respectable amount of content there, and 99% of it is on technology topics.

So, why a reboot? 3 reasons: platform, scope, and life change.

On Blogger I’ve struggled to get the layout and appearance control I want. Features like syntax highlighting aren’t built in, and obtaining them through add-ons has been nightmarish at times. I often have to edit HTML directly to correct formatting and spacing. I appreciate that Blogger has been there for me and has been free, but I want more. I want to focus on my writing and not have to jump through hoops for it to present well. It’s time for a fresh start, and I’m hoping the switch to Wix will give me a better experience.

A second reason to reboot the blog is that I’m widening it’s scope. You can still expect plenty of technology posts, but I’ll now be posting about anything that interests me. That will likely include design, food, travel, writing, leadership and the adventures of settling into my new home, Texas. I also hope to blog more consistently. Everyone in my field says that, but often you end up going dark for months at a time when you’re immersed in a busy project. By giving myself permission to write short, simple posts about a wider variety of topics I’m hoping to blog frequently and regularly.

A final reason for the reboot is life changes, starting with our move to Texas and downsizing (n-progress, we'll be living there by December). Our two daughters are now both out on their own, so it’s just me, my wife Becky, and our son Jonathan at home. That, along with all the events of 2020, make this feel like a fresh start.

Another life change happened in 2019: I am now working for Amazon as an engineering manager. That's a big change from 20 years in the Microsoft arena (Microsoft employee, then working for a Microsoft national consulting partner, the first Azure MVP, lots of Azure cloud consulting). How in earth did I end up working at Amazon? Well, after being laid off in early 2019 my first thought was to return to Microsoft, but the black hole that is Microsoft Recruiting simply never responded to any of my inquiries. In contrast, Amazon Recruiting responded promptly and with interest. You go where you're wanted.
